Dead Ahead

The stakes have never been higher than those we’re facing now
Democracy hangs in the balance as we forward plow
Toward A) restoration of our land of liberty
Or B) freedom crushed under the heels of Trump tyranny.

Today’s elections will foreshadow how the big one goes

In 2024 and we’ll gain after state polls close

Some indication of the path upon which we’ll traverse

Will ‘24 bring sanity’s return or make things worse?

Abortion is the bellwether issue to watch to see

If women’s rights can be restored or if misogyny 

Imposed by lecherous old White men continues to sway

Enough voters to hold gender equality at bay.

Tax breaks that make the rich much richer is another clue

To watch to gain an indication of what will ensue

In ‘24 if enough poor-class voters are convinced

To vote because they’re told they’re high on trickle-down’s cash list.

We hold breath in anticipation while we wait to see

Which way today’s state elections steer our ship’s destiny

Will votes deflect the course set by those killing freedom dead

Or are we doomed to sink on lies they’ve strewn thick dead ahead?
