Falling Darkness

It’s always darkest before it becomes completely black
But that’s how dark our nation will get if increased attack
By ultra-right Republican Trump-loving candidates
Win up-for-grab Senate seats opening up in five states
Where those who believed compromise was good are bowing out
Thus opening the door for wing-nuts to gain further clout.

We are already sore beset by today’s wing-nut group

Margie Greene and Lauren Bobert each day lower stoop

While Louie Gohmert, Emperor for Life, pushes dewormer

As a miracle drug that makes Covid resistance firmer

And January 6th conspirators en masse deny

That they in any way planned treason with their chosen guy.

Once upon a time before Trump darkened our history

Deal makers reached across aisles for democracy

But now partisan wing nuts fight an ever darker fight

With compromise they declare enemy of all things right

And they will fight against deal makers with increasing rage

If ever more wing nuts join in to bring night’s darkest stage.

The darkness now descending will soon fade to total black

If more Trump-loving wannabe tyrants join the attack

After deal makers throw the towel in and give up the fight

And our once shining city on the hill is cloaked in night

And if you hoped this poem could some small candle of light find

That candle’s hard to see when falling darkness makes all blind.
